Monstre Charmant

This series of illustrations is based on Kazuki Sakuraba’s light novel chapter. The story depicts a monster who transforms into a girl, bringing wealth to poor people. Always at her side is a rabbit, acting as her guard. When the greedy king learns of the monster’s power, he dispatches his army to capture her for himself. Tragically, the rabbit perishes in the ensuing conflict, which ultimately leads to the monster's demise. It is revealed that the rabbit was the monster’s heart.

This is the first time I have created illustrations in such a long vertical ratio. I believe it can add more drama to the images. I focused on infusing movement into the illustrations, which I believe is crucial when portraying a dynamic story. For example, I avoided symmetry and emphasized depth in the environment. Most of my characters are depicted in mid-air, and I used curves to enhance their movement.

While this is a fairy tale, it also contains elements of darkness. Therefore, for the color palette, I planned to use classic complementary color combinations. I experimented with blue and orange, red and green, and orange and green in my color studies. Ultimately, I decided to stick with red, which I have frequently used in my artwork. This choice also reflects the violent aspect of the story.
